“Tsiri: maize in the Purépecha language”
Red Tsiri is an attempt by citizens to recover the gastronomic, cultural and agricultural wealth represented by local varieties of organic maize and the peasant lifestyle that supports it in the Pátzcuaro-Zirahuén region. Through the sale of artisinal tortillas, it attempts to give added value to landrace maize, which would otherwise not have a market.
The network was formed in 2009, as a result of the collaboration between researchers and technicians in the Interdisciplinary Group for Appropriate Rural Technology (GIRA) and the UNAM Center for Research on Environmental Geography (CIGA), to create a link without intermediaries between local organic corn producers, tortilla workshops and conscious consumers.
